Best Practices for Sizing LED Drivers for Reliability and Efficiency

As a general rule of thumb, it’s advisable to size the Led Driver to utilize only 80-90% of its rated capacity when driving an LED Assembly.

This ensures optimal performance and reliability by maintaining a 10-20% safety margin.

 Reasons for the safety margin:

  1. Longevity: By avoiding constant operation at maximum capacity, components are subjected to less stress and wear, leading to longer overall durability.
  2. Reduced Heat:  Overloading the power supply can lead to heightened heat generation, accelerating component degradation and potentially causing premature failures.
  3. Improved Stability: Operating at higher capacities can lead to voltage fluctuations and inconsistencies in performance, while staying within the recommended range ensures consistent and reliable operation.
  4. Enhanced Efficiency: Employing higher capacities may lead to inefficiencies and heightened power consumption, while staying within the recommended range ensures optimal power utilization and efficiency.

Light Assembly Setup Examples

One Light Assembly

For a setup with 1x EH188 1200mm Light Assembly, each rated at 65W:

  • Total Light Assembly Power: 65𝑊 × 1 = 65𝑊
  • Adding 20% extra capacity: 65𝑊 × 1.2 = 78𝑊
  • Nearest Available Power Supply Capacity = 80W
  • The recommended power supply is 80W

This provides a 20% headroom, which is within the 80-90% guideline for optimal performance and reliability.

Two Light Assembly

For a setup with 2x EH188 1200mm Light Assembly, each rated at 65W:

  • Total Light Assembly Power: 65𝑊 × 2 = 130𝑊
  • Adding 20% extra capacity: 130𝑊 × 1.2 = 156𝑊
  • Nearest Available Power Supply Capacity = 150W
  • The recommended power supply is 150W

Note: Although the calculation indicates a requirement of 156W for a 20% headroom, a 150W power supply can be used. This provides a 15% headroom, which is still within the 80-90% guideline for optimal performance and reliability.

Four Light Assembly

For a setup with 4x EH188 1200mm Light Assembly, each rated at 65W:

  • Total Light Assembly Power: 65𝑊 × 4 = 260𝑊
  • Adding 20% extra capacity: 260𝑊×1.2 = 312𝑊
  • Nearest Available Power Supply Capacity = 300W
  • The recommended power supply is 300W

Note: Although the calculation indicates a requirement of 312W for a 20% headroom, a 300W power supply can be used. This provides a 15% headroom, which is still within the 80-90% guideline for optimal performance and reliability.
